TeamProf. Harald Burkhardt, M.D.: Deputy Director and Deputy Managing Director of CIRI
Prof Burkhardt studied medicine at Hannover Medical School (MHH) and Aarhus University in Denmark. His professional career began with his medical degree at the MHH, where he obtained his training in internal medicine. In 1988 he obtained his habilitation in experimental rheumatology. He moved to the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, where he completed further training in rheumatology and internal medicine at the Medical Center III and additionally expanded his basic scientific interests as head of a research group affiliated to the Rheumatology Research Unit of the Max Planck Society. In Erlangen, he occupied the position of senior physician at the Medical Center III where he continued his clinical work and was appointed adjunct professor in 1996. In 2006, he accepted the appointment of university professor (W3) in Frankfurt and since then he has been in charge of rheumatology at the Goethe University Medical Center. Professor Burkhardt is a board certified specialist in internal medicine, rheumatology and immunology. He is member of the German Societies for Rheumatology, Immunology, and Connective Tissue Research; as spokesman, he chairs the Rhine-Main Rheumatology Center. From 2006 to 2009, he was a member of the Scientific Committee of the European League against Rheumatology(EULAR) and visiting professor at the Lund University Medical School in Sweden in 2007.
