The activities of CIRI are focussed on the development of diagnostic principles and new therapeutic procedures in rheumatic and related immune-mediated diseases. Almost all rheumatic diseases are chronic and cannot currently be cured, only “controlled”. The modern treatment of rheumatic diseases aims at amelioration of the underlying immune-mediated inflammatory processes through targeted therapeutic interventions. Whereas, in the past, therapeutic options were restricted to broad, , unspecific immunosuppression, such as with corticosteroids, the increased understanding of the inflammation cascade now permits more preciseimmunomodulatory interventions.
Rheumatic disorders share common pathways with diseases in the fields of dermatology, angiology and gastroenterology among others and thus present a challenge to the development of modern diagnosticand therapeutic principles.
