Ankylosing spondylitis (Bechterew’s disease) is the most commonly cited example of the various forms of spondyloarthritis which all share the potential for inflammation of the axial skeleton. The simple transfer to this disease group of findings on rheumatoid arthritis therapy is becoming increasingly insufficient. Targeted drug development programs for these patients are urgently needed, as no evidence-based therapies are available that extend treatment beyond the use of some conventional basic therapies and TNFα blockers.
